What it’s like to have ADHD at work
‘I find it hard to concentrate for long periods of time, so I try not to schedule meetings close together, because I know I won’t be able to focus. When I’m stressed, I become easily distracted. Then I worry that other people are noticing my stress and that adds to the pressure. So now, I’ve started using mindfulness techniques to help me recognise some of the triggers for my distraction. It helps me to concentrate on the job in hand.’
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a condition of the brain that results in excessive activity hyperactivity, impulsivity and difficulty focusing.
We used to think that ADHD was a childhood condition, and it was something that people ‘grew out of’. We now know that this isn’t true, it’s just that the way the condition presents itself changes. An adult with ADHD may not be as impacted as a child, but they might still experience the same disruptive feelings of restlessness.
Many successful people in different fields have ADHD including
Woody Harrelson - Actor, director and activist
Simone Biles - Olympic Gold gymnast
Kathryn Ellison - Pulitzer prize-winning journalist
